Minimax Regret in Practice - Four Examples on Treatment Choice1
نویسندگان
چکیده
Minimax regret is an exact method for deriving a recommendation based on a small sample. It can incorporate costs in its measurement of opportunity loss (regret) in terms of not making the best choice. In this paper we present the methodolgy and implement it in four examples from di¤erent elds: medicine, development policy, experimental game theory and macro economics. We focus on the comparison between two treatments with unknown response. Recommendations based on the binomial average rule, the correlated binomial average rule and on the empirical success rule are derived. Point estimates of the treatment e¤ect round o¤ the picture. Key words: correlated binomial average rule, empirical success rule, estimation, minimmax regret, treatment e¤ect. JEL classi cation numbers: C44, D81, C72, C90.

Robustness in portfolio optimization based on minimax regret approach
Portfolio optimization is one of the most important issues for effective and economic investment. There is plenty of research in the literature addressing this issue. Most of these pieces of research attempt to make the Markowitz’s primary portfolio selection model more realistic or seek to solve the model for obtaining fairly optimum portfolios. An efficient frontier in the ...
متن کاملMinimax Filtering via Relations between Information and Estimation
We investigate the problem of continuous-time causal estimation under a minimax criterion. Let X = {Xt, 0 ≤ t ≤ T} be governed by the probability law Pθ from a class of possible laws indexed by θ ∈ Λ, and Y T be the noise corrupted observations of X available to the estimator. We characterize the estimator minimizing the worst case regret, where regret is the difference between the causal estim...
متن کاملMinimax Invariant Regret Solution to the N - Sample Slippage Problem
A minimax regret test is proposed for deciding whether one of N populations has slipped to the right of the rest, under the null hypothesis that all populations are identical. The problem is formulated as a multiple decision problem under uncertainty relative to a priori distribution of hypotheses and incomplete knowledge of probability distributions of observations. For the problem with nuisan...
متن کاملStatistical Treatment Choice Based on Asymmetric Minimax Regret Criteria
This paper studies the problem of treatment choice between a status quo treatment with a known outcome distribution and an innovation whose outcomes are observed only in a representative finite sample. I evaluate statistical decision rules, which are functions that map sample outcomes into the planner’s treatment choice for the population, based on regret, which is the expected welfare loss due...
متن کاملMinimax-regret treatment choice with missing outcome data
I use the minimax-regret criterion to study choice between two treatments when some outcomes in the study population are unobservable and the distribution of missing data is unknown. I first assume that observable features of the study population are known and derive the treatment rule that minimizes maximum regret over all possible distributions of missing data. When no treatment is dominant, ...
